We specialise in paediatrics and offer speech therapy for kids. We work with children aged from 9 months to 16 years of age to assist with their communication and feeding needs. We help support children with speech development, language delay, social skills, pre-literacy, literacy, stuttering, feeding and voice.
We are located in the Inner West suburb of Abbotsford and service many suburbs including Five Dock, Wareemba, Russell Lea, Chiswick, Rodd Point, Huntleys Cove, Huntleys Point, Tennyson Point, Hunters Hill, Woolwich, Birchgrove, Rozelle, Balmain, East Balmain, Canada Bay, Concord, Cabarita, Breakfast Point, Haberfield, Lilyfield & Leichhardt. We also offer telehealth therapy.
Our speech pathologists use a family-centred approach to formulate and establish intervention goals and implement strategies, to facilitate ways in which to enrich your child’s development.
Clarity of a child’s speech (ie. lisps), how easily understood they are by other speakers and their range of speech sounds.
Use grammar & vocabulary to form basic utterances and more complex sentences.
Comprehension of concepts, vocabulary and grammar, and following instructions.
Use language in social settings (ie. home, daycare, school) with a range of speakers (ie. parents, siblings, peers, teachers).
Understand that words comprise of sounds and syllables and these can be manipulated ie. syllabification, rhyming, blending, segmenting. Also known as 'school readiness' skills.
Read, spell and formulate ideas into sentences and written texts. Reading comprehension is also an essential skill.
How fluently a child can communicate without disfluencies or stutters. Stuttering includes:
§ Repetitions of sounds, words or phrases e.g. Can I-Can I- Can I have
§ Prolongations e.g. sssssssnake
§ Hesitations e.g. well um ah well see um
How a child eats, chews, swallows and drinks. ‘Picky’ eaters or 'fussy' eaters tolerate a limited range of foods with preferences for texture, taste, colour & shape.
Vocal quality (ie. hoarse voice, husky voice or breathy voice), pitch (ie. highness/lowness), volume (ie. loudness/softness) and the way in which a child uses their voice.
The speech pathologist will evaluate your child’s communication or feeding skills. Assessment is dynamic and varies for each child. The initial consult is 60 or 90 minute sessions in length, however in some instances where an informal assessment is completed, this will be conducted via diagnostic therapy over 3-4 sessions, in order to gain substantial information to form a clinical diagnosis.
After the initial consult, the therapist will have a discussion with the family and make the necessary clinical recommendations. Goals will then be devised to target your child's communication or feeding skills.
Weekly therapy sessions will occur for either 45 or 60 minutes to ensure optimal progress for your child.
Therapy aims to facilitate and support your child’s development, thereby improving and positively contributing to your child’s quality of life!
